When the bell rings for the end of school, most children rush home to play. Not Ranjana Regmi.
Instead, Ranjana, who is 11, starts her work as a domestic helper, a shift that lasts until 10pm. When it’s over, she puts in an hour of study.
Her incredible dedication is paying off. Her teachers at Bishwo Rastriya School, which is managed by CSN, say Ranjana’s progress has been remarkable and her English speaking and writing skills have improved dramatically (see progress in writing samples below).
Ranjana comes from an extremely impoverished family in the remote district of Jajarkot, in western Nepal. Raised by a single mother with no regular income, she came to Kathmandu in search of work and an education.
When she first enrolled at Bishwo Rastriya she really struggled. She had had virtually no education up to that point and did not even know the alphabet. But with the support of CSN’s Schools Leaders and the teachers at the school, Ranjana has transformed her learning – and her life.
